A practical guide

Reflect on daily bread in the Lord’s Prayer

Start here

Read Matthew 6:9–13 and pause at the request for daily bread. Name an ordinary need and bring it into prayer.

Keep the request in the whole prayer

The prayer includes God’s name and kingdom, daily bread, forgiveness, and deliverance. Read those requests together so one line does not become the entire picture of prayer.

Name an ordinary need

Write one concrete need rather than a vague summary of your whole life. You might name food, practical help, or strength for a responsibility. This is your personal application of the request, not a new translation of it.

Notice the shared language

The prayer uses our and us. Consider one other person whose needs you want to remember. You can pray for them without assuming you know their circumstances or promising help you cannot provide.

Common questions

Is daily bread the only request in the prayer?

No. Read the surrounding requests in Matthew 6:9–13 to keep it in context.

Do I have to use these journal prompts?

No. They are optional ways to reflect on the passage before praying in your own words.
