A practical guide

A one-minute reflection on listening before speaking

Start here

Before replying, use James 1:19 to check whether you have understood what the other person said. Choose one question before making your point.

Read the three directions together

James 1:19 connects readiness to hear with slowness to speak and anger. Notice the relationship among them instead of treating listening as a technique for winning the discussion.

Restate what you heard

Silently finish: “I think they are saying…” If you are unsure, ask a clarifying question. An original example is: “Are you asking for advice, or would it help if I just listened?”

Choose your reply after the answer

Let the response shape what you say next. You may still disagree or need to set a limit. This practice simply creates a pause in which understanding can come before your prepared argument.

Common questions

Does listening mean I must agree?

No. You can understand someone more clearly while still holding a different view.

Can I use this in a written message?

Yes. Read the message again and check your assumptions before sending a reply.
