A practical guide

A short prayer before a difficult conversation

Start here

Read James 1:19, then write a prayer about listening and speaking with care. Pair the prayer with one practical preparation step.

Read the surrounding teaching

James 1:19–20 calls for readiness to hear, slowness to speak, and slowness to anger. Read those lines together before applying them to the conversation you expect.

Use your own words

An original prayer is: “God, help me listen without planning a quick reply. Help me say what is true with care, and notice when I need to pause.” Change the wording so it reflects what you actually want to ask.

Prepare one clear point

Write the main thing you need to communicate and one question you want to ask. Prayer does not require abandoning a necessary boundary. If the situation is unsafe, seek appropriate help rather than relying on a script to make it safe.

Common questions

Will this make the other person agree?

No. This practice focuses on your preparation and response, not control over someone else.

Can I pause the conversation?

You can consider a pause when it would help you respond carefully. Choose an approach suited to the situation.
