A practical guide

Write a prayer for wisdom in a decision

Start here

Name the decision, ask God for wisdom, and write the information you still need. A prayer can be honest about uncertainty.

Read James 1:5 in context

James invites someone who lacks wisdom to ask God. Read the surrounding verses rather than using the line as a promise that every choice will immediately feel obvious.

Write a specific request

Try this original prayer: “God, I need wisdom about this commitment. Help me see what I have overlooked and ask for good counsel.” Replace the general word commitment with the decision you actually face.

Name the next responsible step

Write one fact to check or one person to consult. For example: “I need to ask what the role requires each week.” Keep your request for guidance distinct from a claim that your first impression must be God’s answer.

Common questions

Must I feel certain after praying?

This exercise does not require immediate certainty. You can keep gathering information and seeking wise counsel.

Can I write more than one option?

Yes. Naming the options may help you explain the decision clearly in your prayer and notes.
