A practical guide

A Proverbs 31 journal prompt for comparison

Start here

Use Proverbs 31:30 to pause when appearance or comparison takes over your attention. Write about what you want to value instead.

Notice what receives praise

Read verses 28–31. The ending contrasts charm and beauty with reverence for the Lord. Consider that contrast within the whole portrait, not as a new rule for criticizing your own or someone else’s appearance.

Name the comparison

Finish: “I noticed myself comparing…” Describe the moment without adding a verdict about your worth. Then write: “Something important that this comparison leaves out is…” You might name care, honesty, patience, or a responsibility no one sees.

Choose a different focus

Write one thing you appreciate about someone that has nothing to do with appearance. Be concrete: “You made time to listen when I was uncertain.” You can offer the appreciation or keep it as a reminder of what you want to notice.

Common questions

Does this exercise mean appearance never matters?

No. It helps you examine what you are using as a measure of value in one particular moment.

What if the comparison keeps returning?

You can return to the prompt without treating it as a test. This is a reflection practice, not a promised solution to persistent distress.
