A practical guide

Make a simple theme map of Proverbs 31

Start here

Read Proverbs 31:10–31 and group your observations by theme. This helps you see more than one familiar verse.

Read from beginning to end

The section forms an acrostic poem in Hebrew, with a succession of opening letters. In English, notice the succession of scenes: the arrangement invites you to read the whole portrait.

Give each verse a short label

Use a few plain words, such as trust, skilled work, generosity, speech, or praise. Let a verse have two labels when appropriate. Keep its number beside the label so you can return to the wording.

Look for what you overlooked

Circle a theme you did not expect. Read those verses again and write one observation about how they connect. Do not force every verse into your favorite category; leave room for a detail that complicates your first summary.

Common questions

Do I need to know Hebrew?

No. A translation and its note about the poem’s form are enough for this exercise.

Is there one correct set of labels?

The labels are your study tool. What matters is whether you can explain each label from the verse itself.
