A practical guide
Three simple journal prompts for Psalm 23
Start here
Read all six verses of Psalm 23, then choose one image to explore in your own words. Let the whole psalm guide the reflection.
Notice care and difficulty together
Psalm 23 includes rest and guidance, but also a valley and enemies. These images belong in the same reading. The psalm is not a description of a life with no trouble.

Choose one prompt
Write a few sentences in response to one question.
- Which image do I notice most today, and why?
- What changes when the psalm speaks directly to God in verse 4?
- What question do I want to bring to God after this reading?
Separate the image from your situation
Write “The psalm says…” before an observation, then “This makes me think about…” before your response. This keeps your experience from becoming a claim about what every detail must mean.
Common questions
Do I need to answer every prompt?
No. Stay with one question if it leads to a thoughtful response.
Can I write about something difficult?
Yes. The psalm itself includes difficult settings. You do not need to make your reflection sound cheerful.
